چکیده

A field experiment was performed to test the hypothesis that the stare may function as a stimulus either to approach or to avoidance, depending on the context. In a. 2X2 bystander intervention paradigm, the nature of the victim's plight and the appropriate remedy were either clear or ambiguous, and the victim either stared at the subject or did not. The hypothesis was confirmed: There was no main effect for staring. More help was elicited in the clear conditions than in the ambiguous conditions, but the differences between these two conditions only reached significance when the victim stared.

Looking back at the stare-in-the-crowd effect: staring eyes do not capture attention in visual search.

The stare-in-the crowd effect refers to the finding that a visual search for a target of staring eyes among averted-eyes distracters is more efficient than the search for an averted-eyes target among staring distracters. This finding could indicate that staring eyes are prioritized in the processing of the search array so that attention is more likely to be directed to their location than to an...

The Invisible Gaze: Three Attempts to Replicate Sheldrake's Staring Effects

Sheldrake has reported a large number of studies on the feeling of being stared at from behind, mostly conducted in school settings with children aged between 8 and 18. Almost all these studies show that people guess consistently above chance. We did three studies to attempt to replicate Sheldrake’s staring studies under conditions of sensory shielding. Participant input their responses in the ...

Assaying Vandevelde’s Approach to Gadamer

The purpose of this paper is to look at four important aspects of Vandevelde’s criticisms of Gadamer. First is his position on Gadamer’s claim that his hermeneutics is a “philosophical hermeneutics” and not a methodology. Second is Vandevelde’s view of interpretation as necessarily going back to the author’s intention, and the status of the “mental state” of the author. Is it relevant to int...

The Design of Implicit Interactions or , Making

Introduction Imagine, for a second, a doorman that behaves as automatic doors do. He does not acknowledge you when you pass by, or approach. He gives no hint which door can or will open—until you wander within 10 feet of the door, whereupon he flings the door wide open. If you arrived after hours, you might stand in front of the doors for awhile before you understood that the doors are locked, ...

Task influences on the dynamic properties of fast eye movements.

It is widely debated whether fast phases of the reflexive optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) share properties with another class of fast eye movements, visually guided saccades. Conclusions drawn from previous studies were complicated by the fact that a subject's task influences the exact type of OKN: stare vs. look nystagmus. With our current study we set out to determine in the same subjects the exa...
